THE LAW OF THE SEA IN ACTION: LEARNING THROUGH GAMIFICATION AND CINEMA (PIEU-B/2024/13)
On Monday, November 18, 2024, we held the Seminar Law of the Sea in Action: Learning Through Gamification and Cinema, organized as part of the Teaching Innovation Project, PIEU-B/2024/13.
The seminar, led by professors from the Public International Law and International Relations Department at UMH, Elena Crespo Navarro (Coordinator), Rocío M. Pozo Tomás, and Adela Rodríguez Mañogil, targeted students enrolled in the Public International Law course, fourth-year students from the Dual Degree in Law and Business Administration (DADE) and second-year students from the Law Degree at Miguel Hernández University of Elche (UMH).
The main objective of the activity was to introduce students to lessons on the Law of the Sea in an innovative, dynamic, and participatory way. To achieve this, various gamification tools were used to enhance the understanding of the subject. Additionally, students were required to watch two miniseries based on real events involving Spanish ships and crews, directly related to the seminar’s main theme.
Subsequently, students worked in groups to create short podcasts explaining concepts, principles, and rules of the Law of the Sea, connecting them to the miniseries and other international practice cases where the application of the Law of the Sea was at stake. A selection of these podcasts was carried out and some were played and discussed during the session.
The activity took place on Monday, November 18, at 1:00 PM with the DADE group and at 6:00 PM with the Law group.

PARTICIPATION IN “PRODIC-UMH NETWORKING” 2025
On March 20, 2025, part of the UMH Jean Monnet Chair ReinforcEU team took part in the 2025 edition of PRODIC-UMH Networking.
During the event, we had the opportunity to learn about some very interesting PRODIC project experiences.
We also shared insights on the implementation of our project (2023-2024), Practical Seminar: Addressing violence against women: youth proposals for European-scale regulation.
Our project was launched with funding from the Vice-Rectorate for International Relations and Cooperation as part of the Teaching Projects Program for Internationalization at Home PRODIC-UMH 2023-2024. It was carried out in April 2024 as part of the European Union Law course involving students from the Double Degree in Law and Business Administration as well as some Law students.

PRACTICAL SEMINAR: UNDERSTAND YOUR EUROPEAN CITIZENSHIP RIGHTS AND HOW TO EXCERCISE THEM. PRODIC-UMH 2024
The Area of Public International Law and International Relations at Miguel Hernández University of Elche organized the Interuniversity Practical Seminar: Understand your European citizens rights and how to exercise them.
The Seminar, coordinated by Prof. Dr. Elena Crespo Navarro, Associate Professor of Public International Law and International Relations at UMH and UMH Jean Monnet Chair holder, was funded by the Vice-Rectorate for International Relations and Cooperation within the framework of the PRODIC-UMH 2024-2025 “Internationalization at Home” Teaching Projects Program.

Specifically, students had to simulate the procedure for submitting complaints to the European Ombudsman and petitions to the European Parliament on selected current issues, as well as real cases involving EU citizenship before the Court of Justice of the European Union (CJEU).
The CHOSEN TOPIC was the status of EU citizenship and the mechanisms provided by the EU to ensure the effective exercise of related rights.
PARTICIPANTS in the project included 4th-year students from the Double Degree in Law and Business Administration (DADE), who worked alongside students from the Italian Universities of Perugia and Cagliari, under the guidance of faculty in Public International Law and EU Law from those institutions: Prof. Dr. Alessandra Lanciotti, Prof. Dr. Simone Vezzani, and Prof. Dr. Maria Cristina Carta (University of Perugia), and Prof. Dr. Francesca Ippolito (University of Cagliari).

UMH TEAM PARTICIPATION IN THE 8th INTERNATIONAL LITIGATION COMPETITION (Transitional Justice)
During the 2024–2025 academic year, the UMH International Litigation Workshop is preparing two teams of students from UMH to participate in the 8th International Litigation Competition (ComLit), organized by the University of Alcalá (Madrid, Spain) and the Universidad Militar Nueva Granada (Bogotá, Colombia).
The competition involves the defense of a hypothetical case before the Inter-American Court of Human Rights and is divided into two phases: written and oral. This year’s hypothetical case was prepared by Óscar Javier Parra Vera (Magistrate of the Chamber for the Recognition of Truth, Responsibility and Determination of Facts and Conduct at Colombia’s Special Jurisdiction for Peace) and addresses a case related to transitional justice.
The teams are being trained within the framework of the UMH International Litigation Workshop by Professors Rocío M. Pozo Tomás and Adela Rodríguez Mañogil (Coaches), under the direction of Professor Dr. Elena Crespo Navarro (UMH Jean Monnet Chair ReinforcEU holder).
The UMH teams have completed the written phase of the 8th International Litigation Competition (ComLit) and are now beginning preparation for the oral phase, during which they will present their arguments at the hearings to be held in Alcalá de Henares from June 16 to 20, 2025.
ROLE PLAYING: SIMULATING INTERVIEWS WITH EXPERTS ON IMMIGRATION AND ASYLUM IN THE EUROPEAN UNION’S AREA OF FREEDOM, SECURITY AND JUSTICE
In the months of April and May we are launching the workshop Role playing: Simulating interviews with experts on immigration and asylum in the European Union’s Area of Freedom, Security and Justice, as part of the teaching innovation project PIEU-B/2024/14, funded by the Vice-Rectorate for Academic Affairs at UMH (University Teaching Innovation Program PIEU-UMH 2024-2025).
This simulation activity is designed to explore one of the lessons of the theoretical syllabus of the course European Union Law, specifically the topic of the EU’s Area of Freedom, Security and Justice (focusing on immigration, border control, and asylum) from a practical perspective.
Students enrolled in the European Union Law course, which is part of the 4th year of the Double Degree in Law and Business Administration (DADE) and the 2nd year of the Law Degree, will simulate a series of radio and television interviews with personalities from the European Union and its Member States who are experts in the field. Additionally, students are expected to regularly follow news related to these topics and prepare a press dossier.
The workshop, coordinated by Professor Adela Rodríguez Mañogil, Assistant Professor in Public International Law and International Relations at UMH and member of the Jean Monnet Chair team ReinforcEU, will take place on April 15 and 29 with the DADE group, and on April 14 and May 5 with the Law group.
Professors Elena Crespo Navarro and Rocío M. Pozo Tomás, also members of the ReinforcEU Jean Monnet Chair team, are also participating in the project.
