XI COURSE ON SECURITY AND DEFENSE: SPAIN’S ROLE IN EU MILITARY OPERATIONS

The UMH Jean Monnet Chair “Fortalecer la Unión Europea reforzando sus valores (ReinforcEU)”, organized with the subsidy of the General Secretariat for Defense Policy of the Spanish Ministry of Defense (Order of July 5, 2023), the XI Course on Security and Defense: Spain’s role in EU military operations.

 

The activity, under the academic direction of Prof. Dr. Elena Crespo Navarro, Associate Professor of Public International Law and International Relations at the University Miguel Hernández and Jean Monnet Chair holdertook place on October 16th and 17th, 2023 in room 0.5 of the Altabix Building (Elche Campus).

 

The Course consists of two round tables. The first round table entitled Spain and the Common Security and Defence Policy of the European Union will be held on 16 October (Monday) and will feature the participation of Prof. Dr. Carlos Jiménez Piernas, Professor of Public International Law and International Relations at the University of Alcalá and Colonel D. Juan Billón Laá, Head of the Department of Defense Culture of the Coordination and Security and Defense Studies Division (DICOES) of the Ministry of Defense. The table will be moderated by Prof. Dr. Elena Crespo Navarro, Associate Professor of Public International Law and International Relations at the University Miguel Hernández.

The second round table, The Spanish Armed Forces in the Military Operations of the UN, NATO and the European Union, will take place on Tuesday 17 October with the participation as speakers of Captain D. Eduardo Manuel Matres Manso, of the Coordination and Security and Defense Studies Division (DICOES) of the Ministry of Defense and Prof. Dr. Valentín Bou Franch, Professor of Public International Law and International Relations at the University of Valencia. The table will be moderated by Prof. Dr. Jaume Ferrer Lloret, Professor of Public International Law and International Relations at the University of Alicante.

The main objective of the activity is to promote among civil society and, particularly among the university community, knowledge, debate and reflection on the work of the Spanish Armed Forces and its vital importance in ensuring the defense of our country in an environment of international peace and security; reflect on the new challenges and threats to security and the tools needed to address them in the current strategic context in a globalized world and on the need to enhance shared security, strengthening cooperation and partnerships, and stressing Spain’s role in defining and implementing the EU’s common security and defence policy. The aim is to increase the visibility of the work of the Spanish Armed Forces and contribute to the creation of a culture of defense, having bridges for the exchange of ideas and opinions between representatives of the civil and military administration and civil society in general.

 

The activity is aimed at university students, especially students of the Degree in Law, Double Degree in Law and Management and Business Administration and Degrees in Political Science and Public Management, Journalism or Psychology, but also at students of other degrees who have more difficult access in their curricula to this topic, such as Physical Education and Sports Sciences, Medicine, Engineering, and at students over 55 years of the “Sabiex” Program of the UMH , as well as at the rest of the university community and other sectors of citizenship.

 

A certificate of attendance will be given to those who, having attended the two round tables, request it.

INTERNATIONAL CONVERSATION: CHALLENGES FOR DEMOCRACY AND HUMAN RIGHTS ((IELAT- UNIVESITY OF ALCALÁ)

Prof. Elena Crespo Navarro, UMH Jean Monnet ReinforcEU Chair holder, participated on 28 September 2023 in the International Conversation: challenges for democracy and human rights organized by the University of San Sebastián of Chile in collaboration with the Institute of Latin American Studies (IELAT) of the University of Alcalá, with a presentation entitled «Mechanisms for the defense of the rule of law in the European Union».

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

INTERNATIONAL DAYS: ELECTIONS TO THE EUROPEAN PARLIAMENT 2024. CONTRIBUTE TO CREATING THE EUROPE YOU WANT

The UMH Jean Monnet Chair “Strengthening the European Union by reinforcing its values (ReinforcEU)” organizes, with the financing of the Presidency of the Generalitat Valenciana (Resolution of 27 September 2023, DOGV of 6 October 2023), the International Days: European Parliament Elections 2024. Contribute to creating the Europe you want.

This activity, directed by Prof. Dr. Elena Crespo Navarro, Associate Professor of Public International Law and International Relations at the UMH and UMH Jean Monnet Chair holder, will take place on 30 October 2023 in the Misteri d’Elx classroom in Torrevaillo building (Campus of Elche) at 11:00.

The Conference consists of a round table and a participatory practical workshop.

The ROUND TABLE will be composed of three speakers: Prof. Dr. María Cristina Carta, Assistant Professor at the Faculty of Law of the University of Perugia (Italy); Prof. Dr. Laura Aragonés Molina, Assistant Lecturer in Public International Law and International Relations at the University of Alcalá; Prof. Dr. Fernando Lozano Contreras, Lecturer in Public International Law and International Relations at the University of Alcalá and Director of the European Documentation Center of the University of Alcalá and  Dña. Ana Alonso, Head of Europe Direct Comunidad Valenciana in Alicante. The table will be moderated by Prof. Dr. Elena Crespo Navarro, Associate Professor of Public International Law and International Relations at the UMH and UMH Jean Monnet Chair holder.

After the round table, a PARTICIPATORY PRACTICAL WORKSHOP will be held, in which the focus will pass directly and fully to the participants. It will begin with the realization in the classroom of a Kahoot! and a digital Escape room to review the theoretical contents exposed at the round table. A reflective debate on a topical issue will follow. The debate will take place in the form of a simulated plenary session of the European Parliament in which students, divided by political groups, will have to reach the adoption of a final consensus resolution. The workshop will be moderated by the professors of the Area of Public International Law and International Relations, Prof. Adela Rodríguez Mañogil and Prof. Rocío M. Pozo Tomás.

The objective of the Conference is to improve knowledge about the EU among citizens, reinforcing EU values through the promotion of reflective debate in an intergenerational environment; promote constructive conversations based on tolerance and respect focused on finding solutions to problems; To promote teamwork; promote understanding and the search for consensus on issues that affect people’s daily lives; raise awareness of the opportunities that the EU offers to youth and promote voting in the future elections to the European Parliament 2024.

The aim of the Conference is to improve awareness of the EU among citizens, reinforcing EU values through the promotion of reflective debate in an intergenerational environment; promote constructive discussions based on tolerance and respect focused on finding solutions to problems; encourage teamwork; promote understanding and consensus-building on issues that affect people’s daily lives;  raise awareness of the opportunities that the EU offers to young people and promote voting in future elections to the European Parliament 2024.

The Conference is mainly aimed at university students of the Degree in Law, Double Degree in DADE, Degree in Political Science and Public Management and Degree in Journalism, but also other degrees that have more difficult access in their curricula to these subjects, such as Psychology, Physical Education and Sports Sciences… and students over 55 years from the UMH “Sabiex” Program and, in general, the entire university community.

Certificates of attendance will be given to those who, having attended the round table and workshop, request it on the registration form.

III CONFERENCE ON THE DEVELOPMENT OF THE PILLAR OF SOCIAL RIGHTS (UNIVERSITY OF VALENCIA)

Prof. Elena Crespo Navarro, UMH Jean Monnet UMH ReinforcEU Chair holder, participated on 25 October 2023 in the 3rd Conference on the Development of the European Pillar of Social Rights, organized by the University of Valencia, with a presentation entitled «The work of the Council of Europe: the European Social Charter».

ROUND TABLE SERIES "THE EUROPEAN UNION: SPECIFIC THEMATIC AREAS" (UNIVERSITY OF ALICANTE)

Prof. Elena Crespo Navarro, UMH Jean Monnet UMH ReinforcEU Chair holder, participated as speaker on 14 November 2023 in the round table entitled «The European Union’s border control, asylum and immigration policies», as part of the round table series: The European Union: specific thematic areas, organized by the Jean Monnet Chair The European Union and the right of asylum, of the University of Alicante and held in the Hall of Degrees of the Faculty of Law of that University.

WINTER SCHOOL 2024 UNIVERSITY OF PISA (Reinforcing EU responsible global leadership Promoting EU values for a rules-based multilateral world)

 

Prof. Elena Crespo Navarro (UMH Jean Monnet ReinforcEU Chair holder) and Prof. Francisco Pascual Vives (team member of the UMH Jean Monnet Chair ReinforcEU) participated in the Winter School 2024: Reinforcing EU responsible global leadership Promoting EU values for a rules-based multilateral world.

This activity, organized by the Jean Monnet Chair ProSoEULaw Abroad (Project: 101085367) of which Prof. Leonardo Pasquali is the holder, was held in Pisa between February 5 and 8, 2024.

Prof. Elena Crespo Navarro presented, on February 5th 2024, a presentation titled «EU founding values» and Prof. Francisco Pascual Vives participated on February 7 with a presentation titled «Upholding and promoting the judicial solution of international disputes in wider world through EU international agreements».
