CONFERENCE: THE CHALLENGES OF THE NEW VALENCIAN GOVERNMENT

Professor Elena Crespo Navarro, Jean Monnet Chair ReinforcEU holder at UMH, participated in the VII CONFERENCE ON VALENCIAN SELF-GOVERNANCE: A PERSPECTIVE FROM THE SOUTH OF THE VALENCIAN COMMUNITY: THE CHALLENGES OF THE NEW VALENCIAN GOVERNMENT, organized by Victoria Rodríguez Blanco, Professor of Political Science and Public Administration.

VIII CONFERENCE ON SECURITY AND DEFENSE (UNIVERSITY OF VALENCIA)

Professor Elena Crespo Navarro, Jean Monnet Chair ReinforcEU holder at UMH delivered a lecture titled “The European Union’s Common Security and Defense Policy” during the VIII CONFERENCE ON SECURITY AND DEFENSE: SPAIN’S SECURITY IN A GLOBALIZED WORLD organized by Professor Valentín Bou Franch with funding from the Spanish Ministry of Defense and held at the University of Valencia on September 30 and October 7, 2024.

 

                                            


 

XII COURSE ON SECURITY AND DEFENSE UMH: THE ROLE OF THE SPANISH ARMED FORCES IN EUROPE’S DEFENSE

The University Miguel Hernández University (UMH) Jean Monnet Chair “Strengthening the European Union by Reinforcing Its Values (ReinforcEU)” organized the XII Course on Security and Defense: The Role of the Spanish Armed Forces in Europe’s Defense, with funding from the General Secretariat for Defense Policy of the Spanish Ministry of Defense (Order dated September 3, 2024).

The activity coordinated by Professor Dr. Elena Crespo Navarro, Jean Monnet Chair holder was held on October 14 and 15, 2024, in Room 1.6 of the Arenals Building (Elche Campus).

The course consisted of two roundtables. The FIRST ROUND TABLE titled Facing New Challenges and Threats to Security: The Role of the Spanish Armed Forces was held on Monday, October 14. It featured the participation of Prof. Dr. Carlos Jiménez Piernas, Professor of Public International Law and International Relations at the University of Alcalá, and Colonel Francisco José Marcos Martín, from the Strategic Analysis Area of DICOES, Ministry of Defense.The round table was moderated by Prof. Dr. Elena Crespo Navarro, Professor of Public International Law and International Relations at University Miguel Hernández.

The SECOND ROUND TABLE took place on Tuesday, October 15, under the title Spain’s Role in the European Union’s Military Operations. The speakers were Colonel Juan Billón Laá, Head of the Defense Culture Area at DICOES, Ministry of Defense, and Prof. Dr. Valentín Bou Franch, Professor of Public International Law and International Relations at the University of Valencia. The round table was moderated by Prof. Dr. Jaume Ferrer Lloret, Professor of Public International Law and International Relations at the University of Alicante.

The primary objective of the activity was to promote awareness, debate, and reflection within civil society (particularly among the university community) about the work of the Spanish Armed Forces and their vital importance in ensuring the defense of our country in an environment of international peace and security. The aim is to reflect on the many and varied challenges and threats that must be faced to ensure security in the current strategic context, as well as to explore the potential tools to address them. It also focuses on the need to enhance shared security by strengthening cooperation and alliances. Additionally, the goal is to increase the visibility of military operations deployed abroad, highlighting their importance in conflict prevention, peacekeeping, and post-conflict stabilization. The activity seeks to improve public understanding of the objectives, functioning, and activities carried out on the ground by international missions and operations, while contributing to the creation of a defense culture and fostering dialogue between representatives of civil and military administrations and civil society as a whole.

The activity was aimed at university students, particularly those enrolled in the Degree in Law (on-campus and hybrid), Dual Degree in Business Administration and Law (DADE), Degree in Political Science and Public Administration and Degree in Journalism. It was also open to students from other fields with limited access to these topics, such as Psychology, Physical Education and Sports Sciences, Medicine, Engineering, and students over 55 years old from the “Sabiex” Program at the University, as well as faculty and the general public. A certificate of attendance was provided to those who, having attended both roundtables, requested it.

XIV COURSE ON SECURITY AND DEFENSE, UA: THE PARTICIPATION OF THE SPANISH ARMED FORCES IN INTERNATIONAL MISSIONS

Professor Elena Crespo Navarro Jean Monnet Chair “Strengthening the European Union by Reinforcing Its Values (ReinforcEU)” holder at University Miguel Hernández, participated on October 15, 2024, as moderator of the roundtable titled “Spain’s Defense Policy in International Missions” during the XIV Course on Security and Defense: The Role of the Spanish Armed Forces in International Missions, organized by the University of Alicante’s Center for European Studies, with funding from the General Secretariat for Defense Policy of the Ministry of Defense. The course was held on October 15 and 16, 2024, at the Faculty of Law of the University of Alicante.

 

HUMAN RIGHTS TRAINING COURSE OEI

Professors from the Department of Public International Law and International Relations and Jean Monnet Chair, ReinforcEU team members, Elena Crespo Navarro, Adela Rodríguez Mañogil, and Rocío M. Pozo Tomás, participated in the Human Rights Training Course organized by the Ibero-American Institute for Training and Learning of the Organization of Ibero-American States (OEI). They delivered the module titled The Right to Equal Treatment and Non-Discrimination, which was conducted online throughout October 2024.

SEMINAR CURRENT CHALLENGES IN INTERNATIONAL RELATIONS (UAH-UMNG)

On November 25, 2024, Prof. Elena Crespo Navarro (UMH Jean Monnet Chair ReinforcEU holder) participated in the «Seminar on current challenges in International Relations» aimed at graduates in Law and International Relations from the Military University Nueva Granada (Bogotá, Colombia), with a module titled The European Union and Human Rights.

The group of participants from UMNG, accompanied by the Dean of the Faculty of Law of this University, Dr. Andrés González Serrano, traveled from Colombia to attend the Seminar which was held in person over two weeks at the University of Alcalá.

CHALLENGES FOR THE PROTECTION OF HUMAN RIGHTS IN THE DIGITAL ENVIRONMENT (LEGALTECH UMH)

On December 2, 2024 at 6:00 p.m., the Seminar Challenges for the protection of human rights in the digital environment was held coordinated by the Jean Monnet Chair (ReinforcEU) at UMH as part of the project Data-oriented justice and efficiency in Administration (Legaltech UMH).

The activity took place in person at the Elche Campus (room 1.2, Altabix) and was broadcast to the Orihuela Campus (Room 2.5, Casa del Paso).

The seminar featured as speakers Mr. Dante Negro Alvarado, Director of the Department of International Law of the Secretariat for Legal Affairs of the Organization of American States (OAS), and Prof. Dr. Francisco Pascual Vives, Professor of Public International Law and International Relations at the University of Alcalá and Director of the University Institute for Research in Latin American Studies (IELAT). The session was moderated by Prof. Dr. Elena Crespo Navarro, Associate Professor of Public International Law and International Relations at the UMH and UMH Jean Monnet ReinforcEU Chair holder.

 

PARTICIPATION IN RADIO UMH LEGAL FREQUENCY December 11, 2024

Professors Elena Crespo Navarro, Rocío M. Pozo Tomás, and Adela Rodríguez Mañogil, UMH Jean Monnet Chair ReinforcEU team members, participated on December 11, 2024, in the roundtable discussion on Radio UMH’s Frecuencia Legal, hosted and co-directed by Prof. José Carlos Espigares Huete and Luis Baeza, a DADE student at the University of Alicante. Carmen Ortiz del Valle, Professor of Commercial Law at the UMH, also participated in the program.

The discussion focused on the UMH Jean Monnet Chair ReinforcEU and on the research being conducted by PhD candidates Rocío M. Pozo Tomás and Adela Rodríguez Mañogil within this framework under the supervision of Prof. Elena Crespo Navarro.
