WHAT IS THE EU AND HOW DOES IT WORK?

RThis activity, dedicated to students over 55 years from the SABIEX Program of the University Miguel Hernández, seeks to promote the integration of adults in the socio-cultural context that the University represents.

The course is part of the activities developed within the framework of the University Classrooms of Experience  (AUNEX)and aims to promote intergenerational communication and ensure quality permanent training throughout life.

Description: The activity consists of a series of conferences, followed by debates, dedicated to providing an overview of the European Union, its origins and historical evolution, its institutions and bodies, its legal order, especially the importance of European values and in particular the EU’s action in the field of human rights protection ad intra and ad extra, with particular attention to the EU’s relations with neighboring countries.

Methodology:  The conference format, followed by debate, is complemented by the eminently practical workshops on the European Union and its values, European citizenship, the fight against misinformation… Additionally, short videos on relevant topics will be screened during the sessions.

It is also planned to carry out some activity in which AUNEX students can participate jointly with younger undergraduate and postgraduate students, in order to promote intergenerational debate.

Locations and schedules: 45 hours per academic year. The course is taught during the first (months of December-January, Ibi Headquarters) and second semester (months of February-March, other locations) in four groups, in four different locations in four cities in the province of Alicante (Ibi , Elche, Orihuela and Benidorm) thanks to the collaboration of the respective Cities Councils. 15 hours are taught in each course (three hours per week).

This course is dedicated to students over 55 years of age from the SABIEX Program of the Miguel Hernández University. This program seeks to promote the integration of adults in the socio-cultural context that the university represents, thus favouring intergenerational communication and the improvement of the quality of life by developing quality education and permanent lifelong learning training.

Description: The activity is planned as a series of conferences followed by debates dedicated to providing a general vision of the EU, its origin and historical evolution and a basic presentation of the EU institutions and bodies, EU Law and, in particular, the relevance of the European values, especially the EU’s action in the field of human rights protection ad intra and ad extra, with particular attention to the EU’s relations with neighbouring countries.

Methodology: The conferences and debates will be complemented through workshops of an eminently practical nature on topical EU issues, in particular about the European values, citizenship, promoting European way of life, fighting disinformation… In addition, are planned video projection sessions on relevant topics followed by debate. It is also planned the participation, in some of the sessions, of undergraduate and postgraduate students in order to favour intergenerational debate. 

Venues and opening hours:

45h per academic year. The course will be taught to three groups in three of the headquarters of the University, in different locations of the province (Elche, Campello y Altea) in collaboration with the municipalities of these localities. Each course consists of 15 hours of class (three hours per week for 5 days in the second semester of each year).
