The UMH Jean Monnet Chair Strengthening the European Union by reinforcing its values \u200b\u200b(ReinforcEU)<\/strong><\/em>, Ref. 101085550, held by Prof. Dra. ELENA CRESPO NAVARRO<\/strong>, has as its MAIN OBJECTIVE to promote, consolidate and reinforce from the University Miguel Hern\u00e1ndez the activities to promote knowledge, reflection, debate and research about the European Union as an international organization for regional integration with broad competences that are projected on very different sectors, paying special attention to the enormous importance of consolidating and reinforcing the values \u200b\u200bon which it is based.<\/p>\n

Values<\/strong> \u200b\u200bsuch as respect for human dignity, freedom, democracy, equality, the rule of law and respect for human rights, including those of persons belonging to minorities, which are common to Member States in a society characterized by pluralism, non- discrimination, tolerance, justice, solidarity and equality between men and women (Art. 2 Treaty of the European Union).<\/p>\n

There is no doubt about the importance for the European Union of the preservation, development and strengthening of these values,
both ad intra (in the Member States) and ad extra (in its relations with third States), insofar as they are essential to ensure the proper functioning of the European Union itself as such and the well-being of its citizens, but also peaceful coexistence not only in Europe, but also in the rest of the world.<\/p>\n

At the global level, it is essential for the European Union to strengthen its leadership and play a more active role in defending multilateralism and cooperation based on respect for International Law. In this sense, the Union must act as a leading international actor in a globalized world, not only as a trading power but also as a political power, striving not to renounce the defense of democratic values as the most appropriate way to promote international prosperity, peace and security.<\/p>\n

From the JM Chair we encourage research activities and reflection on these topics and scientific debate among academics and professionals from different countries. At the same time, we offer quality specialized learning training aimed at students of all levels (Bachelor, Master and PhD) and we seek to involve the rest of society, promoting the active role of citizens on strengthening the values \u200b\u200bof the Union.<\/p>\n

At this moment, such values \u200b\u200bare threatened on several fronts. The advance of populism throughout Europe and the increasingly frequent disinformation campaigns pose serious risks to the values \u200b\u200bthat democratic systems must be able to face. Under these conditions, the active involvement of citizens in caring for and defending democratic values is particularly necessary. An involvement that must be based on tolerance, dialogue and mutual respect.<\/p>\n

From the Jean Monnet UMH Chair we try to offer citizens a greater knowledge, not only about the European Union, but especially about their rights and freedoms in the European Union and about the mechanisms available for their full exercise and active participation in the democratic life of the Union, defining its future development and maintaining and strengthening its values.<\/p>\n

La C\u00e1tedra Jean Monnet de la UMH Fortalecer la Uni\u00f3n Europea reforzando sus valores (ReinforcEU) <\/i><\/b>(<\/span>Strengthening the European Union by reinforcing its values), <\/span><\/i>Ref. 101085550<\/b>, de la que es titular la\u00a0<\/span>Profa.\u00a0Dra. ELENA CRESPO NAVARRO<\/b>, tiene como OBJETIVO PRINCIPAL impulsar, consolidar y reforzar desde la Universidad Miguel Hern\u00e1ndez las actividades de promoci\u00f3n del conocimiento, la reflexi\u00f3n, el debate y la investigaci\u00f3n sobre la Uni\u00f3n Europea<\/span> como organizaci\u00f3n internacional de integraci\u00f3n regional con amplias competencias que se proyectan sobre muy diferentes sectores, <\/span>\u00a0<\/span>atendiendo, muy especialmente, a la enorme trascendencia de consolidar y reforzar los valores en los que se fundamenta.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>

Valores <\/b>como el respeto de la dignidad humana, la libertad, la democracia, la igualdad, el Estado de Derecho y el respeto de los derechos humanos, incluidos los de personas pertenecientes a minor\u00edas, que son comunes a los Estados miembros en una sociedad caracterizada por el pluralismo, la no discriminaci\u00f3n, la tolerancia, la justicia, la solidaridad y la igualdad entre hombres y mujeres (Art. 2 Tratado de la Uni\u00f3n Europea).\u00a0<\/span><\/p>

No cabe duda de la importancia para la Uni\u00f3n Europea de la <\/span>conservaci\u00f3n, el desarrollo y el reforzamiento de tales<\/span> valores, tanto <\/span>ad intra<\/span><\/i> (en los Estados miembros) como<\/span> ad extra<\/span><\/i> (en sus relaciones con terceros Estados), en la medida en que son esenciales para garantizar el adecuado funcionamiento de la propia Uni\u00f3n Europea como tal <\/span>y el bienestar de sus ciudadanos, pero tambi\u00e9n la convivencia pac\u00edfica no solo en Europa, sino tambi\u00e9n en el resto del mundo.<\/span><\/p>

A nivel global, es fundamental que la Uni\u00f3n Europea refuerce su liderazgo y ejerza un papel m\u00e1s activo en defensa del multilateralismo y la cooperaci\u00f3n basada en el respeto del Derecho Internacional. En ese sentido, la Uni\u00f3n debe actuar como un acto internacional de primer orden en un mundo globalizado, no solo como potencia comercial, sino tambi\u00e9n como poder pol\u00edtico, esforz\u00e1ndose por no renunciar a la defensa de los valores democr\u00e1ticos como la v\u00eda m\u00e1s adecuada para promover la prosperidad, la paz y la seguridad internacionales.<\/span><\/p>

Desde la C\u00e1tedra fomentamos la investigaci\u00f3n y la reflexi\u00f3n sobre estos temas y el debate cient\u00edfico entre acad\u00e9micos y profesionales de diferentes Estados. Al mismo tiempo, ofrecemos formaci\u00f3n especializada de calidad dirigida al alumnado de todos los niveles (Grado, Master y Doctorado) y buscamos implicar al resto de la sociedad, fomentando el papel activo de la ciudadan\u00eda en el reforzamiento de los valores de la Uni\u00f3n.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>

En el momento en el que vivimos, tales valores se ven amenazados desde diversos frentes. <\/span>El avance del populismo en toda Europa y las cada vez m\u00e1s frecuentes campa\u00f1as de desinformaci\u00f3n, suponen serios riesgos para los valores que los sistemas democr\u00e1ticos deben ser capaces de afrontar. En esas condiciones, <\/span>se hace particularmente necesaria la implicaci\u00f3n activa de la ciudadan\u00eda en el cuidado y la defensa de los valores democr\u00e1ticos.\u00a0Una implicaci\u00f3n que ha de basarse en la tolerancia, en el di\u00e1logo y el respeto mutuo.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>

Desde la C\u00e1tedra Jean Monnet UMH <\/span>procuramos ofrecer a la ciudadan\u00eda un mayor conocimiento, no solo sobre la Uni\u00f3n Europea, sino especialmente acerca de sus derechos y libertades en la Uni\u00f3n Europea y sobre los mecanismos de los que disponen para ejercerlos plenamente y para participar activamente en la vida democr\u00e1tica de la Uni\u00f3n, definiendo su desarrollo futuro y manteniendo y reforzando sus valores. <\/span><\/p>

Poner en marcha actividades de innovaci\u00f3n docente<\/strong>, como la colaboraci\u00f3n con la Cl\u00ednica jur\u00eddica UMH, apostando por una formaci\u00f3n basada en la relaci\u00f3n entre la realidad social y la jur\u00eddica, mediante el contacto directo con la pr\u00e1ctica en materias en las que est\u00e1n en juego los valores de la UE.<\/p>
